Canning

Sep 19, 2013 | Blog | 0 comments

Another new friend has taught me the awesome ways of finding cheap produce and then canning. My awesome friend, Meg took me to a farm south of Utah County and we got baskets full of apples for $5. WHAT A DEAL!!
Of course I bought 5 baskets. We then ate lots and made lots and lots of applesauce.
I am not an expert on canning but making applesauce was the easiest thing to can.
#1) CLEAN:
We sorted out any bad apples, leaves, sticks, etc.
Cut apples into quarters, cutting off any bruised, rotten or bad spots.
**Start sterilizing Jars & Lids
#2) BOIL:
Boil apples in big pot of water till soft enough to stab with fork.
#3) STRAIN:
I use the fruit strainer, it makes it easy to do. You put the cut apples into the top, and work the crank and it strains all the skin, seeds, etc out one side and leaves you with great applesauce.
#4) CAN & Water Bath
I add a bit of cinnamon, but no sugar. These apples were sweet enough. Then I funnel them into the sterilized jars to 1/2″ from top. Add sterlized lids & Rings & put into the waterbath for 25 minutes (for our elevation).
BOOM applesauce DONE!
The kids loved it & I love the smell of apples & cinnamon…smells like Fall!
