We love to travel and we love to home school. We especially love to combine the two and have a good time doing both! In this post I’ll share how we maintain a travel homeschool while on vacation.
If we can we like to curate our trips according to what we’ve been learning about in homeschool. Last year, Evee was learning about dolphins & we were fortunate to travel to Discovery cove in Florida and learned how to train dolphins. We also went to Sea World and played with the Dolphins!
No matter where we go we like to try to keep as close to our normal home school routine while we travel as possible. Here’s how we home school while we travel.
#1 Exercise/PE:
First thing in the morning we make it a point to get some physical activity. This helps our bodies to wake up as well as our minds so they can be ready to learn.
#2 School work:
Before we go out on our daily adventures, we get schoolwork done. The kids bring some of their books and work on their lessons. I love physical workbooks such as those we get from The Good and The Beautiful because our children can do their work anywhere. There is no time spent waiting for wifi to connect and no agonizing over poor connection.
#3 Adventure:
Most times we are able to finish our work before we go on our daily adventure. Sometimes we don’t finish in time. Either way, we take off for the day. One of our favorite things to do as we explore and adventure through whatever city we’re vacationing in, is create educational moments. On our last trip, we took the animal safari and Wyatt brought along his sketchbooks so he could draw some giraffes. We also scanned QR codes we found around the park in order to learn more about jungle animals. To learn more about incorporating homeschooling into your tips you can find other tips at Flying kids.
#4 Finish work:
On our last trip, we ended our days early and were able to return to the hotel early afternoon. When we return to the hotel we take naps, finish any homeschooling assignments that we didn’t get through in the morning, and have fun swimming if we’re at a place with a pool.
#5 Vacation:
This last tip isn’t necessary, but we recommend it if you can. Be sure to set aside a day at the end of your vacation to relax. Sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation and this is a great way to do it.
