I am all about the Sun…so sometimes it is hard to find fun activities to do with the kids when it’s not sunny. BUT the winter opens up so many possibilities that I tend to overlook since I love the warm versus Cold! To kick off this New Year right, I want to make sure we are enjoying ALL the seasons. I have compiled a fun list of activities to do when it’s cold…whether that is inside or out!
OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES
- Sledding / Build a Fort
- Snowboard/skiing trip
- Ice skating
- Snowshoeing
- Non-snow – hike
FAMILY OUTINGS
- Visit Zoo / Aquarium / Planetarium
- Visit Local Museum
- Visit Childs Museum
- Visit the Historic Sites around your town
- Visit a Sporting event
STAY COZY INSIDE
- have a hot cocoa and story night (read classic stories: Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, share favorite poems or Aesops Fables)
- make snowflakes to decorate your house with
- learn how to bake a new treat as a family
- finger painting / Food paint (cut out potato ends as shapes)
- puzzles (chose a family puzzle to work on slowly over the month)
- make popcorn and have a Talent Show
- Pull out your warm sleeping bags and have a living room campout
BE PRODUCTIVE
- clean out closets (clothes & toys) & donate them to the local goodwill (link to organizing after holidays)
- pick a new talent to develop – musical, creative arts, sports, etc…
- Share family history stories about grandparents and great grandparents – Call grandparents & ask questions to share together to get to know them better
- move the furniture around in one of your kid’s rooms – give them a new look & feel for their room
I have found that planning fun activities so the kids don’t get bored makes the cold months easier to handle. It also helps offset the winter blues that are so common during the winter season. What other winter activities do you enjoy? Share them in the comments below.
