Facing My Fear of Alligators

Feb 9, 2022 | Family Life | 0 comments

While Jase and I were in Florida with friends, he planned yet another trip to face one of my biggest fears. Some of us in the family are really afraid of big predators (including me). Can you guess what terrifying predators there are in Florida? If you are thinking alligators then your right.

I don’t know how Jase does it but he keeps finding crazy things to do that get me facing all my fears! First, it was facing my fear of heights and jumping off the Stratosphere. Now, this!

The Surprise Stop at GATORLAND!

What I thought was going to be a nice lunch before getting on our flight turned out to be a stop at Gatorland to see live alligators. To make it even crazier we didn’t just see them from afar we got to feed them too.

Jase bought tickets for a special walk down on the bayou next to the alligators. We had to walk by them where there are no fences or cages. It was so scary. There were gators all over, tons of them.

We had to feed alligators. Tossing them chunks of meat from only 5 feet away. Nothing between us and the gators.

A Show of Creepy Crawling Things

I thought feeding alligators was bad but the next part was even more terrifying. We went to a show where they brought out different insects and snakes. Not lucky for me, I was picked to go on stage and get surprised by tarantulas (just inches away from my hands) That was super scary! That wasn’t all though. Next, they brought out enormous snakes. I am so glad I was not on stage for those.

I also sat on an alligator. It had a mouth strap on so it couldn’t bite but it was still a bit scary. You never know what might happen! It was surprisingly smooth to the touch.

Alligator for Lunch

We fed the alligators, and now they will feed us! In the mix of all the craziness, we finally did get lunch. There was fried alligator meat on the menu so, of course, I tried it. The alligator tasted like weird chicken.

To finish off this big day of fear I was brave and held a baby alligator in my hands (it was still 2 feet long)! Jase held a very large snake! This was definitely a thrilling day but I faced my fear of spiders, snakes, and alligators. And with overcoming our fears as a theme this year there will be many more crazy adventures like this.
